1. Introduction

This Privacy Policy explains how Jason Robert Chadwick, trading as Valrik Studios (“we”, “our” or “us”), collects, uses, stores and protects personal information when you play Bastion City on the Meta Quest platform.

We are committed to protecting player privacy and handling personal information responsibly in accordance with applicable data protection legislation, including the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018, as amended.

This policy covers information obtained through the Meta Horizon Platform SDK and information associated with your in-game player account.

2. Information We Collect

Meta User ID

When you access Bastion City, we retrieve your unique Meta User ID through the Meta Horizon Platform SDK.

This identifier is used as your permanent internal account reference within Bastion City.

We use it to:

  • Identify your player account across different game sessions.
  • Associate your account with your saved player information.
  • Retrieve and save persistent game state and progression.
  • Maintain continuity between gameplay sessions.

Your Meta User ID is stored in a MySQL database hosted on a Virtual Private Server (VPS) used to operate Bastion City.

The identifier is used exclusively for internal account identification. It is not displayed to other players, used as your in-game username or made publicly visible.

Meta Display Name

We retrieve your Meta Display Name through the Meta Horizon Platform SDK to simplify initial account setup.

Your Meta Display Name is used to pre-populate the in-game username field when you first create your player identity.

You can edit or replace this suggested username before using it in the game.

Your selected in-game username is stored as part of your player account and may be visible to other players during multiplayer gameplay.

Your Meta Display Name is not used as your permanent account identifier.

In-Game Player Information

Bastion City maintains persistent player information associated with your Meta User ID.

This includes your selected in-game username, saved game state, character information, progression and other gameplay data necessary to provide the game’s persistent multiplayer functionality.

3. How We Use Your Information

We process this information to provide and operate Bastion City.

Our purposes include:

  • Creating and maintaining persistent player accounts.
  • Identifying returning players.
  • Retrieving and saving player state and progression.
  • Associating game data with the correct player account.
  • Simplifying initial username selection.
  • Supporting multiplayer gameplay and player interactions.
  • Maintaining the reliability and security of our online services.

We do not use Meta User IDs or Meta Display Names for targeted advertising, unrelated marketing or independent commercial profiling.

We do not sell or rent player information.

4. Lawful Basis for Processing

Under Article 6 of the UK GDPR, we rely on the following lawful bases for processing personal information.

Performance of a contract — Article 6(1)(b)

We process your Meta User ID and associated player account information where necessary to provide persistent account identification, saved progression and the multiplayer services you use.

Without the necessary account identifier, we cannot provide persistent account functionality.

Legitimate interests — Article 6(1)(f)

We use your Meta Display Name to simplify initial account setup by suggesting a username.

Our legitimate interest is to improve the account creation experience while allowing players to choose their own in-game identity.

We may also process limited account information where necessary to protect the security and reliability of our services, subject to applicable data protection requirements.

5. Data Storage and Retention

Bastion City uses a MySQL database hosted on a Virtual Private Server (VPS) to store persistent player information.

Your Meta User ID acts as the internal reference linking your account to its associated game data.

Player account information is retained while your account remains active and the information is required to provide the game’s functionality.

If you request deletion of your account, we will delete the associated personal information from our active systems, subject to any applicable legal obligations or permitted retention exceptions.

Information is not retained longer than necessary for the purposes described in this policy.

6. Data Sharing

We do not sell, rent or commercially distribute player information.

Your Meta User ID is used internally by Bastion City and is not publicly disclosed.

Our VPS hosting provider may process or have access to information as necessary to provide hosting, infrastructure, maintenance and related technical services.

Where service providers process personal information on our behalf, we require appropriate data protection and security safeguards.

Your chosen in-game username may be visible to other players as part of multiplayer gameplay.

Meta’s own collection and processing of account information is governed by Meta’s applicable privacy policies and platform terms.

7. Information Security

We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect player information against unauthorised access, disclosure, alteration, loss or destruction.

Player account data is maintained within our server infrastructure, and access is restricted to authorised systems and personnel responsible for operating and maintaining Bastion City.

Although we take appropriate precautions, no online system can guarantee absolute security.

8. International Data Processing

Bastion City operates using VPS-based server and database infrastructure.

The location of this infrastructure and any supporting service providers determines where personal information is stored and processed.

Where personal information is transferred outside the United Kingdom, we will comply with applicable UK data protection requirements and ensure appropriate transfer safeguards are in place where required.

Further information about relevant processing locations and safeguards can be requested using the contact details below.

9. Your Privacy Rights

Under applicable data protection legislation, you may have the right to:

  • Request access to personal information held about you.

  • Request deletion of your personal information.
  • Request restriction of certain processing.
  • Object to processing based on legitimate interests.

  • Lodge a complaint with the relevant data protection authority.

These rights are subject to applicable legal conditions and exceptions.

We will respond to requests within the time limits required by applicable data protection legislation, normally within one calendar month.

Deleting your Bastion City account will result in the loss of associated persistent player data and progression.

11. Children’s Privacy

Bastion City is distributed through the Meta Quest platform and operates subject to applicable Meta platform requirements, age restrictions and safety controls.

We aim to minimise personal information processing and use only the information necessary to provide the game’s functionality.
